Marian L. O'Connell      Artist, Printmaker

About the Artist

Marian was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At three months old, she began moving with her parents to various parts of the country because of her father’s position with the US Department of Interior. The moving continued when she married her husband, Bill, until he left the Air Force in 1977. The couple settled in Middletown, RI where they have been residing since.

Artist Marian O'Connell at the pressMarian earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado. While there she took only two art classes. Upon returning from a tour of duty in the Philippines in 1974, the same year her third daughter was born, Marian took an oil painting class that started her career.

By 1990, her calling as an artist had blossomed. She was working in oil and watercolor painting when her partner at DeBlois Gallery in Newport recommended she try printmaking. Marian has not left the medium since.

Marian exhibits in both regional and national competitions annually. She has been awarded artist membership several years ago to the Copley Society in Boston and was awarded membership in the Boston Printmakers in 2008, one of her major goals. She’s a member of both the National Association of Women Artists and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, in New York City. Marian is a member of the Monotype Guild of New England and a founding member of the Art League of Rhode Island. She’s on the executive board of the North Kingstown Photo Guild as treasurer.

In 2005, Marian won the Anna Hyatt Huntington Bronze Medal of Honor, the second highest award in Printmaking, at the annual Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club exhibit. In 2007, she was in the North American Print Bi-Annual of the Boston Printmakers, Inc. where she was honored with two patron awards and purchases awards, and in 2011 she was also awarded a material award from Portfoliobox, Inc., Pawtucket, RI. In 2009, she won Best in Show and the Museum Award, at the Newport Annual Members Show at the Newport Art Museum. She had her first museum solo show at The Newport Art Museum, in 2011.

In the past she has also taught printmaking at the Newport Art Museum and has juried shows
